New Products That I Can’t Wait To Try

Hi there! Did you think I got lost? I sort of did. We are in move-in mode for some folks and starting on some very exciting new projects so it’s been an “on the road again” kindda month. No complaints here!

As part of my catch up mode with you I wanted to share some new products that have been introduced to the market by my friend Amy Howard. Team Amy make an incredible line of furniture and they are known for their finishes. Amy actually moved to Italy and studied under the best in the industry to learn how to do these incredible techniques.

I took one of her classes on water gilding a few years ago and told her in a very loud voice in the middle of class that “I will NEVER again question your prices. This is stinkin hard!” LOL  I worked for the better part of a day painting, glazing, gilding, waxing etc a tiny little piece of wood literally about 3″ x 4″. I can’t imagine the hours that go into a bed.

Anyways, I digress, Amy and husband Gene have formulated and introduced to the market a line of products that simplify the process for many of our favorite finishes and I wanted to share them with you.

First up is their ONE STEP that’s give the look of a waxed, chalk painted finish over old wood but with almost no prep and in one step.

Forever Design BlogNow that’s my kind of product!

As you can see if comes in many lush colors.

Second up, ZINC MAKER

Make dressers, countertops etc look like zinc with this spray on product.

How about planters? Now you’re talkin’.

For the really industrious there is the aforementioned gesso and gild kit… no thanks.

But the one I am soooooooooooooo exited about is this:

Forever Design Blog

For the first time ever I can request an antiqued mirror without exposing my peeps to toxic acid. And it looks great!

No, it’s not one of those awful (read, doesn’t work) spray it on the front of the mirror things.

They simply worked with chemists until they figured it out and I am so happy.

Look out world! Here I come.

I Want Color… But Which One?

I am having the best time preparing for a seminar I will be teaching this week on color and all of its characteristics. I used to do this all the time but it has been a while so while pulling pictures to explain different concepts I am getting reacquainted with Mr. Munsell and Mr.Harris and Mr. Goethe (all color theory gurus). I spent a lot of time with these guys while in school and it was one of my favorite subjects.

I have to admit I do NOT miss having to paint all of those color charts and wheels attempting to get shades and tints perfected.

But understanding how to choose a color with confidence that it will achieve the desired effect brings me joy.

Color, it defines personalities, creates brands and generally makes the world go ’round.

Have a colorful weekend!

Everyone Wants A Beautiful Home

I discovered this photography project by Margaret Courtney-Clarke and thought it was fabulous. It reminds me  of the African art that inspired some of my fabric designs last year. I will let her tell you in her own words the reason for her work then I will simply let you enjoy the images.

“These images portray a unique tradition of Africa, a celebration of an indigenous rural culture in which the women are the artists and the home her canvas.” Margaret Courtney-Clarke

Don’t you love that the personality of the owner comes out in their work.  The cry for beauty is built into the DNA of the human spirit.  Without it we shrivel up.  What are you doing today to make your world more beautiful?

How Many Pairs Of Shoes Is Too Many?

Alright girlfriends it’s time to get real. I ran across this infographic this morning and thought, “really”? I understand completely about the need for the appropriate type of shoe for different occasions but since I have always worn a size 4 1/2 or 5 having a closet full of them has always been a non-issue for me. I rarely find shoes to try on much less buy so when I read about people owning 3000 pairs of shoes I am appalled. I mean you would have to change shoes 8.2 times a day to wear each of them once in a year. Am I missing something here?

I am putting on my cute little flat boots so that I won’t kill myself as I climb ladders on construction sites today and I can seriously hardly wait to hear if you are with me on this or I am just on a different planet from all the other women in the world.

It’s your turn Sistahs. Talk to me!

Living The Dream

Do you ever catch yourself saying or maybe thinking, “If only I could go there or experience that I would… whatever.” I think probably we all have. I read a  post by Erin over at Elements of Style that made me feel that way momentarily today. To see her full post go here. It’s about this amazing high end camp in upstate New York called The Point in Saranac Lake, NY. The Point is apparently one of those places set aside for the rich and famous to pretend that they are roughing it. It really is lovely. Here is the boat house on their property.

Cindy BarganierThen it hit me. From day one living at The Waters I have loved going to the pool pavilion because I said it always made me feel like I was at a high end summer camp. Do you see a similarity?

Cindy Barganier

Ok so admittedly their glam quotient is a bit higher in their bathroom but ours is a pool house this is the master bath.

The rough wood plank walls that smell of cedar, the blue stone and natural stone and the smell of  spa chemicals always make me smile.

The more I read the more Aha! moments I had.

Here is a couple picnicking on their lake.

Here are some pictures snapped as The Writer rowed me around our lake in our canoe in November.

Our boats don’t look  like this,

but rather like this

or maybe this

Cindy Barganier

No, we didn’t have wait staff set up on the dock with tea when we arrived back.

Cindy Barganier

No, actually we go to places like this for great food with dear friends.

Cindy Barganier

I could even find more points of interest. ( no pun intended)

At the end of an eventful day in the fresh air and open spaces they don tuxedos and come to places like this for dinner.

the point fp

This was our little cabin in the country that we left to move to our current home. We loved our plaid flannel slipcovers and that grand stone fireplace. How I miss those fires. (Unbelievably, I couldn’t find a single decent picture of the interior that was not filled with pictures of people who would not want to appear in print here.) The entire house was only 916 sf and we lived there quite happily for almost 14 years.

Cindy Barganier

And sometimes….

we even pulled out the cool stuff and got all gussied up, just like we were at The Point.

So what’s my point? Am I trying to say, “Look at me. I live somewhere cool, too.” No, far from it. The point is this.

We are all so amazingly blessed. We have fabulous lives even if they do hold daily challenges. We have friends and family who drop everything to help when help is needed. We rejoice when others rejoice and we weep when others weep. So while, yeah, it would be great to go to The Point one day or any number of other places still on my bucket list, at the end of the day I really am living a dream life and so are most of you. I hope you will remind me every day to embrace it and to say, “Thank You.” for it.
